This is the FINAL monthly newsletter you will receive before the recitals. The next piece of information you will receive is our Backstage & Recital Preparation Information 2018 note, which will be emailed to all families on Thursday, May 24th.

Dear Parents and Dancers:                                        

Please note the class schedule for the remainder of the dance season. 

×   TODAY, Monday, May 21st is our last Monday of classes. Dancers in Monday classes should make every effort to be in class TODAY!

×   NO classes will be held Tuesday, May 22nd and Wednesday, May 23rd as recital picture taking continues at the studio.

×   There WILL BE classes held at the studio on Thursday, May 24th.

×   NO classes will be held Friday, May 25th, Saturday, May 26th and Monday, May 28th for the Memorial weekend holiday.

×   There WILL BE classes held at the studio on Tuesday, May 29th, Wednesday, May 30th and Thursday, May 31st.

×   NO classes will be held on Friday, June 1st. Dress rehearsals are being held at Greendale High School.

×   There WILL be classes held at the studio on Saturday, JUNE 2nd. Dress Rehearsals begin on Saturday, June 2nd at 12:30pm.

×   no classes will be held at the studio Monday, June 4th – FRIDAY, June 15th, 2018.

×   Summer classes begin Monday, June 18th, 2018.

REMEMBER…all dancers are expected to attend ALL OF their scheduled dress rehearsalS & recital performances at Greendale High School Friday, june 1st – FRIDAY, June 15th, 2018.

By now you should have ALREADY:

×        Purchased your recital tickets. If you missed purchasing your tickets on Ticket Day, April 28th, please purchase your tickets NOW at the studio during our regular hours of operation. Tickets are now on sale to the general public.

×        Reviewed the Dress Rehearsal ScheduleDress rehearsals are held at Greendale High School – 6801 Southway in Greendale. All dancers must arrive 30 minutes prior to their stage time and plan to stay 30 minutes after their stage time.  All rehearsals are in full costume with proper hairstyle & make-up!

×        Purchased the correct tights and put final touches on your costuming so you are prepared for your recital pictures on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, May 20th, 22nd and 23rd.

×        Signed-up to help backstage for at least one of the shows. We need MANY more volunteers! Please volunteer on one of the evenings that you will not be in the audience. We truly appreciate all of our backstage volunteers!!! We are anticipating that parents of the boys in the show will volunteer to be in the boy’s dressing room for at least one of the performances. As always, we truly appreciate your help!

RECITAL DVD & BLU-RAY ORDERS – Order information and forms will be available during recital week at Greendale High School. Order your recital DVD and Blu-ray at the shows or through the mail by SATURDAY, JUNE 23rd.


You will be required to return your video camera to your car.  You may videotape DRESS REHEARSALS only.


You may take photos at DRESS REHEARSALS only.

Camera flashes are extremely distracting and dangerous for the dancers on stage. Guests moving about the auditorium to take pictures even without a flash is also very distracting, not only to the dancers on stage, but to the rest of the audience as well. Please remind your guests of these rules and to remain in their seats to enjoy the performances. Your dancer and all the other dancers have practiced for months to perform 2-3 minutes on stage. PLEASE take your pictures at dress rehearsal ONLY instead of during their short time on stage during performances. Please remain in your seats during the show and keep the aisles clear. Please inform your guests of this courtesy before they attend any of our 6 performances.

Please remember to limit movement in the auditorium during the performances. Do NOT get up in the middle of an Act to change your dancer. Make sure your dancer is on our costume change list so we are able to assign them a backstage changer.


Please meet with the backstage coordinators during dress rehearsal week Friday, June 1st through Thursday, June 7th at Greendale High School to receive your assignment(s). A Backstage and Recital Preparation sheet will be emailed to all YDA families on Thursday, May 24th. May we please add your name to our backstage volunteer list?

BACKSTAGE VOLUNTEER/DANCER ARRIVAL TIMESShowtime is 7:00 p.m. for all performances.  Each show is divided into two Acts with a 15-minute intermission in between. Each show including intermission runs approximately 2½ hours. Auditorium doors will open at 6:30 p.m. All non-volunteering parents should be out of the backstage area by 6:30 p.m. DANCERS MUST ENTER THE SCHOOL THROUGH THE BACK DOORS. ALL DANCERS MUST WEAR A COVER-UP OVER THEIR COSTUME AT ALL TIMES TO AVOID STAINS FROM ACCIDENTAL SPILLS AND TO MAINTAIN THE PROFESSIONAL ATMOSPHERE OF WHICH WE ARE SO PROUD!  (A cover up is a large over-sized shirt, robe, etc.)

Specific arrival times are listed below:

◇       All backstage volunteers should arrive no later than 6:00 p.m. on each of their designated show dates.

◇       All DANCERS should arrive in the backstage area in costume with make-up and hairstyle complete by 6:15 p.m. each evening.

Please enter the school through the back doors where our backstage staff will be set up. 

It is most important that parents and dancers adhere to the specific arrival times listed. The backstage staff needs to arrive by 6:00 p.m. and be in place before dancers arrive at 6:15 p.m. Dancers need to arrive by 6:15 p.m. in order for the staff to coordinate costume changes and to avoid any last minute changes. It is extremely difficult for the backstage staff to line dancers up to perform and it also causes unneeded stress to other dancers when members of their group are not on time. For more information about show preparations, etc. please refer to the Backstage & Recital Preparation sheet that will be emailed to you on Thursday, May 24th.

PICKING UP YOUR DANCER AFTER A PERFORMANCE – Please be on time!!! dancers should be picked up by 9:30 p.m. after each of the performances. Parents of younger dancers may choose to pick up their dancer backstage before the end of the show to take them home.  You must inform someone from our backstage crew that you are taking your dancer early! Dancers cannot however, be brought into the audience in costume to watch the remainder of the show. No dancers in costume will be allowed in the audience at any time during any of the performances. They will NOT be allowed to participate in the final bows during the FINALE.

Dancers & INTERMISSION Refreshments will be available before the show, during intermission and at the end of each of the performances. Dancers are allowed to purchase refreshments prior to, during and after the show ONLY, not during intermission. DUE TO THE LARGE CROWDS, DANCERS MUST REMAIN BACKSTAGE DURING INTERMISSION!  Do not ask dancers to meet you or your guests in the hallway during intermission.

Dancers must have a cover-up on over their costume at all times! Dancers age 11 & younger are not allowed to leave the backstage area without an adult. All dancers are required to ask permission from the backstage crew to get refreshments or to use the restroom – NO EXCEPTIONS!!! All dancers must stay in the backstage area unless they are purchasing refreshments or using the restrooms ONLY!  If the “refreshment privilege” is abused, we will not allow anyone out of the backstage area unless accompanied by an adult. In other words, no hanging out in the hallways!

 At All Six of our Recitals:

×      Concessions for Sale! Refreshments and bottled water will be sold in the lobby of Greendale High School during all 6 shows. In addition, water flavor packets will be sold to add to your water bottles if desired. We will have lots of main dish items such as hot dogs, nachos, pizza, veggie and fruit cups and many, many homemade salads, treats and goodies at our concessions tables! Refreshment prices vary as to what will be sold at each of the performances. Profits from our concessions benefit the dancers in the Technique Intensive Program and those attending Dance Excellence 2020. In addition, a portion of our profits will be donated to the NYC Dance Alliance Scholarship Foundation.

×      Create Your Own Flower Bouquet! Pick and choose what you would like to include in a bouquet for your dancer. (Cost determined on the number of items selected). All profits from our flower sales benefit the above as well.

×      YDA-4-MDA Giveaway Baskets! Take a look at our fun-themed baskets filled with gift certificates to many area restaurants and attractions to help benefit our annual MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) fundraiser! We have been fundraising each year for MDA since 2005!

WHAT TO EXPECT BACKSTAGE – Please keep in mind that there will be hundreds of dancers backstage. This may tend to be a bit overwhelming to the younger dancers, but rest assured, we have been prepping them for the backstage experience. We continue to inform them of what will be happening backstage right up to recital week. Every person is encouraged to ask for help and is introduced to a familiar face backstage. We ask that children bring books and small games to help keep them entertained. They may also bring non-staining snacks and drinks in spill-proof containers only. This will help to avoid accidents. They may also bring a blanket or pillow to sit on. Parents not assigned to help or baby-sit backstage can help a great deal by bringing your child backstage, locating his/her dressing room and reacquaint your child to his/her fellow classmates. After your child is comfortable with their surroundings, please find your seat in the auditorium. Parents may go backstage during intermission.

In some rare cases one or two of the very young dancers (age 3 – 4) may not be comfortable backstage. Moms, you are welcome to stay backstage with them, but at this point in their preparation for the show, we are telling them that all moms go into the audience to watch the show unless you are a backstage helper. Each group is assigned a helper who is in charge of keeping their group “entertained.” 

 IMPORTANT – NO MEN OR BOYS ARE ALLOWED IN ANY OF THE GIRLS’ DRESSING ROOM AREAS! MEN & BOYS ARE ONLY ALLOWED IN THE BOYS’ DRESSING ROOM AREA. Dads, if you are coming to pick up your female dancer, please talk with the backstage crew posted by the dressing room doors and they will get your dancer for you. Dads, we ESPECIALLY need more of you… if you are able, please volunteer to help backstage in the boys’ dressing room.

 NO DANCERS ARE EVER allowed in the audience (whether in costume, cover-up or regular clothes) if they are participating in that evening’s performance!!! dancers must remain backstage!

 RECITAL PICTURES – Pictures taken on May 20th, 22nd & 23rd will be mailed directly to your home. Any problems with missing photos etc. should be reported directly to ON POINTE PHOTOGRAPHY, a division of SPORT PICS at 262-780-2902.

 Perfect attendance and other awards Perfect attendance awards will be given during the dancers’ last day of regular classes this year: Friday, May 18th; Monday, Monday 21st; Tuesday, May 29th; Wednesday, May 30th; Thursday, May 31st and Saturday, June 2nd. Awards are given to those dancers who attended all of their regularly scheduled classes this year. If your dancer attends more than one class per week they need to satisfy the requirement in only one class. You will only receive ONE award, even if you have perfect attendance in more than one class. It is not considered perfect attendance if you missed a class and came to a make up class. If you missed a rescheduled class, you will still have a perfect attendance record. 

We will also be giving out awards to dancers celebrating their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th and 25th recitals during the last week of classes. A list of these dancers was emailed along with this newsletter. Please verify that you are included on this list if you should be. We do make mistakes and don’t want to leave anyone out! 

 SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVEYoung Dance Academy is hosting its 6th annual summer dance intensive from Friday, August 10th through Thursday, August 23rd! Faculty will include master teachers from Broadway, TV and feature films plus our own fantastic faculty.  Look for details online mid-summer!!! 

 LOST & FOUND – Please check the lost and found TODAY! All items not claimed by Thursday, May 31st will be taken to Goodwill.

HAIR STYLING & COSMETIC APPLICATION SERVICES – Please feel free to set up an appointment with one of our hair and cosmetic staff if you need help during rehearsal or recital week. Refer to the May newsletter for specific services available and pricing. We will take your name and phone number and your stylist will get in touch with you immediately! Remember to bring your own make-up and hair supplies as they are not provided.

2018 COMMEMORATIVE RECITAL T-SHIRTS – Recital T-shirts are close to being SOLD OUT! Get your shirt TODAY! T-Shirt prices are as follows: $18.00 for one (1), $35.00 for two (2), $48.00 for three (3), each additional shirt is $16.00 each.

 REGISTRATION FOR our 2018 – 2019 dance season – All current students will receive registration information for the 2018-2019 dance season via email on Friday, June 1st. Registration for fall classes will be held beginning Monday, JuNE 18th & TUESDAY, JUNE 19th for returning students. New student registration begins Wednesday, June 20th. Registration continues throughout the months of July and August during our summer program hours.

Thank you to all who attended our spring Parent Observation days, April 16th – 22nd. We hope you enjoyed seeing how much your children have grown as dancers over this past year!

TUITION – May tuition must be paid by Monday, May 7th to be eligible for the May drawing to receive a credit for a free summer class card valued at $145! If you do not plan to attend any summer classes, you may opt for a free $50 YDA Gift Certificate instead.  Congratulations to Teagan Barnes, winner of last month’s $50 YDA Gift Certificate!

By now you should have received the following VIA EMAIL:

×        Performance Line-up – The order of the dances in each of the six shows. Make sure you have double checked that your dancer does not have two dances back to back in any of the recitals.

×        Dress Rehearsal Schedule – Dress Rehearsal Days – Friday, June 1st, Saturday, June 2nd, Monday, June 4th, Tuesday, June 5th, Wednesday, June 6th and Thursday, June 7th, 2018. Dress rehearsals are held at Greendale High School in the Henry Ross Auditorium. There will be no dress rehearsals or regular classes held at the dance studio or GHS on Friday, June 8th.

×        Picture Schedule and *Order Forms – Recital Picture Days – Sunday, May 20th, Tuesday, May 22nd and Wednesday, May 23rd. There will be NO regular classes held on Tuesday, May 22nd and Wednesday, May 23rd due to Recital Picture Days. Pictures are held at the dance studio.  Please let your teachers know if you will be unable to attend your scheduled class picture.  *Recital picture order forms were available on Ticket Day, Saturday, April 28th. They are now available at the studio front desk.

×        Stage Make-Up Instruction Sheet – Includes a diagram and helpful hairstyling tips. (*See below).


×        Recital Costumes and Costume Instruction Sheets – If you have any questions concerning your dancer’s recital costume please do not hesitate to ask. You should have received an email on Monday, April 23rd with a list of classes whose costumes have not yet arrived. Those costumes will be distributed as soon as we receive them. Dancers will not receive a costume if any unpaid fees are past due. Please check with the front desk staff concerning any unpaid balances.


COSTUME ALTERATIONS – Parents of dancers are responsible for alterations to all costumes. We order costumes in December and generally order larger than measurements taken in November to allow for growth. We cannot possibly judge how much or how little all the students we order costumes for will grow or will not grow. PLEASE REMEMBER TO ADJUST PANT LENGTH IF NECESSARY. Costumes come in a standard long length to accommodate the tallest dancers. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE PANTS DRAGGING!  Please do not feel it is necessary to go to great lengths to have a costume altered to be custom fit. Many times safety pins and/or basting stitches work well and costumes look fine from stage.


RECITAL SHOES AND TIGHTS – You should already have the proper shoes required for each dance unless they have been back ordered. If any back ordered shoes are not in by your picture day we will hide feet in the group picture or you may be able to borrow a “try-on” for individual pictures if we have the style & color you need in stock. We have many shoes in stock at this time. Please make sure your dancer has the proper shoes for their Recital Picture Day.


Required style and color of tights for each dance is listed on the costume instruction sheet you should have taken home with your costume. Costume instruction sheets are also available on our website and the YDA app. Please purchase your tights as soon as possible. Tights can be purchased right at our front desk. No ordering necessary! Remember that you need them for pictures on Sunday, May 20th, Tuesday, May 22nd and Wednesday, May 23rd. Don’t wait until the last minute to purchase your tights! We sometimes run out of certain sizes and colors on Picture Days when too many people wait until the day of their picture to purchase their tights! Please make sure your dancers have the proper style, color and brand name of tights. Please note: Pantyhose are not tights. We check the dancers for correct tights during Picture Days and at Dress Rehearsals.


HAIR STYLING & COSMETIC APPLICATIONNow that you have your costume instruction sheets with hairstyle descriptions and hair & make-up instruction sheets, some of you may feel you need a little extra help in the hair and make-up areas. We would like to make this as stress-free as possible for you! Some of you may be concerned about changing hairstyles between dance numbers now that you have received the line-up for each show. The backstage staff will be able to demonstrate how the hairstyle changes can be done during dress rehearsal week at Greendale High School. We want to make this experience as stress-free as possible for you.  We want you to enjoy recital time with your dancer.  Do not stress yourself out… it is only hair and make-up!





Hair Styling & Cosmetic Application Services


Our staff will be available to set and style hair and apply cosmetics for you for Recital Pictures! They will be using this service as a fundraiser.


IMPORTANT – For hygienic purposes, you must provide your own sponge rollers, hair rubber bands, combs, brushes and bobby pins as well as cosmetics and applicators. We do not share products or applicators. Services offered are as follows:


Cosmetic Application - $10.00 per dancer 

Straight Ponytail Hairstyle - $10.00 per dancer        

Bun Hairstyle - $5.00 per dancer  


An appointment must be scheduled for hair STRAIGHTENING. No appointment is necessary for bun hairstyling and/or cosmetic application. Please arrive at least 1 hour prior to your scheduled picture time if you plan to use our services. Payments are made directly to the stylist at the time of service. Cash is preferred; however you may write a check directly to the individual stylist as well.




Please refer to the ticket purchasing information sheet for more information.  No dancers in costume allowed in the auditorium during any shows! If a dancer changes out of costume to sit in a purchased reserved auditorium seat they may not return backstage to participate in the show’s FINALE. If you have not purchased your ticket limit of 10 tickets per family, you have through Saturday, May 5th to purchase your limit. On Monday, May 7th, the remaining tickets go on sale during regular studio hours beginning at 4:30pm, first come, first serve.

COSTUME CHANGES – Each show is divided into 2 Acts with a 15-minute intermission. The backstage crew will make costume changes within each Act. A list of costume changes within each Act is being compiled at this time. If dancers have a dance in the First Act and one in the Second Act, we assume that you will come backstage during intermission to help your child with the costume and hairstyle change.  Please check during dress rehearsal week that your dancer is on the costume change list if your dancer has a costume change within a single Act in any of our 6 recitals. REMEMBER TO LIMIT MOVEMENT IN THE AUDITORIUM DURING THE RECITALS. Please rely on our back stage crew to change your dancer within an Act instead of getting up to go backstage to do it yourself. Auditorium doors will open in between dances ONLY! Please do not get up in the middle of a dance group’s performance to exit the auditorium.

PREPARING FOR THE SHOWS – All dancers are being adequately prepared for the rehearsals and recitals. Teachers explain what to expect backstage and the importance of cooperation in helping to make things run smoothly. For example, little ones are told they must wait for someone to pick them up backstage and not to go looking for mom or dad in the hallways, etc.

RECITAL TIMES – Show time is 7:00 p.m. for each of the 6 performances. You will receive more information about dancer arrival times, etc. in the June Newsletter and Backstage Information sheet, which will be emailed to you in mid-May.


Auditions for the 2018- 2019 Technique Intensive Program for dancers ages 7-18 years will be held on the dates and times below:

*Age listed below is the dancer’s age as of JANUARY 1st, 2019 (not necessarily their current age)*

Dancers Ages 7-9*Tuesday, May 29th from 5:30 – 7:00pm

Dancers Ages 10-12*Thursday, May 31st from 6:30 – 8:00pm

NEW THIS YEAR: Dancers Ages 13 and Older interested in auditioning for the 2018-2019 TI Program must submit an application and video if they were not involved in the 2017-2018 YDA TI Program. Please inquire for details.

For more information please pick up a TI Program packet at the front desk! In addition, an informational meeting was held at the dance studio on Saturday, April 28th concerning the above program. If you missed the meeting and have questions, we will put you in touch with a parent representative to answer any of your questions.

TI NEWS Our competitive dancers will compete at the Mark of Excellence Competition in Minneapolis, MN this weekend and the Showstopper Dance Competition in Chicago the following weekend. Good luck dancers and safe travels!

RECITAL T-SHIRTS – We will again be selling T-shirts to commemorate our annual recital.

T-shirt prices are as follows: $18.00 for one (1), $35.00 for two (2), $48.00 for three (3), each additional shirt is $16.00 each.

To receive the volume discount, you must purchase your T-shirts all at one time. In other words, you may not come in and purchase two shirts one day for $35.00 and then come in on another day and purchase two more T-shirts for the discounted price of $16.00. T-shirts range in size from Child Small up to Adult Extra Large. Get your t-shirts early! We do not place a second order, so once they are gone, they’re gone! Recital T-shirts will be available for purchase no later than Tuesday, May 15th. Watch for an email update!

Dear Parents and Dancers:

Happy Spring to all! Accompanying this newsletter is the Recital Ticket Lottery and Ticket Purchasing Information sheet. Our Ticket lottery begins Monday, April 9th. Please refer to the Ticket Purchasing Information sheet for details.

EASTER VACATION – The studio IS closed for Easter vacation from FRIday, March 30TH – SATURDAY, APRIL 7th.  Classes resume MONDAY, April 9th.  Remember to mark your calendars now!

 PARENT OBSERVATION WEEK – Parent Observation Week will be held MONDAY, APRIL 16TH – SATURDAY, APRIL 21st. Parent Observation Week is primarily for parents only please, as we do not have the room to accommodate friends and other relatives. Siblings are not permitted to wait outside the classrooms unsupervised. In the past we have had problems with brothers and sisters running up and down the hallways and going into rooms in which they are not permitted. Please bring a folding chair with you for your comfort if you so desire. TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES AND REFRAIN FROM CONVERSATION DURING YOUR DANCER’S CLASS AS A COURTESY TO BOTH THE DANCERS AND TEACHERS.

BE CAREFUL! – There will be many cars in the parking lot during Parent Observation Week, so please be careful! Watch for children darting in between cars, etc. DO NOT PARK ANYWHERE ON OUR LAWN OR IN THE DRIVEWAY ENTRANCE. Parking is available on Marquette Avenue if there is not enough space in the lot.  DO NOT STOP YOUR CAR IN FRONT OF THE LOBBY DOOR ENTRANCE! We need to keep our driveway clear to keep the flow of traffic running smoothly! DO NOT BLOCK THE DRIVEWAY WHILE YOU ARE WAITING FOR YOUR DANCER! DO NOT PARK IN OUR HANDICAP SPACE NEAR THE FRONT DOOR UNLESS YOU HAVE A HANDICAP STICKER IN YOUR VEHICLE! PLEASE OBSERVE OUR PARKING LOT SIGNS! Thank you so much for your consideration! Thank you for your cooperation in helping make your Parent Observation Week run smoothly!

MONTHLY TUITION – Tuition payments for April must be made by Saturday, April 14th to qualify for the $50 YDA Gift Certificate drawing. 2018 RECITAL LINE-UP – The 2018 Recital Line-Up will be emailed to all YDA families on Monday, April 9th. The performance line-up is the exact order of dances in each of the 6 recital shows. All shows begin at 7:00pm. Please refer to the Recital Performance Schedule 2018 that you received on Monday, March 5th to know in which of the 6 shows each class will perform.

RECITAL COSTUMES – Some costumes have arrived and dancers will be trying them on, checking for fit. Dancers will be bringing home their costumes along with a “costume instruction sheet” at the end of April. The costume instruction sheet lists the required tights (style & color), shoes (style & color), hairstyle and additional instructions. If you have any questions after receiving your costume and instruction sheet, please ask your child’s teacher for help. Dancers in each class are required to have the same hairstyle, shoes, tights, etc. PLEASE READ THE COSTUME INSTRUCTION SHEETS CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS “TO THE LETTER.”

IMPORTANT! – No dancer will be given any costume until all outstanding fees are paid through April. This includes unpaid late tuition fees and bounced check repayments and fees. Feel free to inquire at the desk to see if you have any recorded unpaid late fees.

HAIRPIECES – Some dancers enrolled in more than one class may require a change of hairstyle for each specific dance. Most ballet dances require a bun hairstyle whereas the majority of the other classes require some sort of curly hairstyle. Many parents have found that buying a curly hairpiece to match their child’s hair color is an easy way to change from a bun to a curly style and vice versa. We have found www.cheerleaderhairpieces.com has some of the most natural looking hairpieces in many color choices. We have a color wheel at the front desk so you can find the appropriate match. Check it out!

DANCE SHOES AND RECITAL PICTURE DAYS – If you have not ordered shoes for the recital, please do so now. At this time, we cannot guarantee you will receive your shoes in time for our Recital Picture Days: Sunday, May 20th, Tuesday, May 22nd and Wednesday, May 23rd. Backordered shoes can sometimes take up to 6 weeks to ship. Dancers must be in full costume with required hairstyle and make up for class pictures, even if you do not plan on purchasing any pictures. As most of you know, our class pictures are displayed on our lobby monitors and in the hallways at the studio and we would like everyone to be included in these pictures. A lighter version of stage make-up is strongly suggested for pictures.  Stage make-up information will be available at the end of the month.

RECITAL TICKET INFORMATION – Tickets for our June 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th and 15th performances go on sale SATURDAY, APRIL 28TH.

Recital tickets are sold using a lottery system. The lottery system is explained in the separate “ticket” newsletter you should have received along with this newsletter. You are limited to a 10-ticket maximum per family during the first week of ticket sales to ensure that every family gets an even share of tickets. Beginning Monday, May 7th at 4:30 p.m. all remaining tickets will go on sale.

Ticket sales on SATURDAY, APRIL 28TH begin at 8:00 a.m. Tickets are $15.00 each for all performances. Everyone must purchase a ticket to attend our shows, except of course the dancers backstage and children age 3 & under if seated on a lap of a guest. Please make note at this time that absolutely no dancers are allowed in the auditorium during any of the performances unless they are not performing in that particular recital and have bought a ticket for that particular show.


BACKSTAGE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – Now is the time for parents AND dancers age 12 and older to volunteer to help backstage during our recital week Saturday, June 9th through Friday, June 15th. We need as much help as possible! Please consider helping backstage during at least one of our 6 performances. Our backstage staff will be here at the studio on Saturday, April 28th (Recital Ticket Day) to help you with your questions.


Auditions for the 2018- 2019 Technique Intensive Program for dancers age 7-18 years will be held Tuesday and Thursday, May 29 and 31.

In addition, please attend an important meeting for all those interested in the TI and Competitive Dance Programs to be held on Saturday, April 28th at 10:00 a.m. at the studio. This meeting is primarily for parents who have not had their dancer involved in any of the above listed programs during this past dance season, however all are welcome and encouraged to attend to be well informed. The presentation will last approximately 20-30 minutes and will be followed by a question and answer session.

•        Stage Make-Up Application Instruction Sheet – Includes diagrams and tips for applying cosmetics for stage and styling hair in the required hairstyles. (end of April along with recital costumes)

•        Recital DVD Purchasing Information - NOTE: NO VIDEO CAMERAS OF ANY KIND are allowed in the auditorium during any of the recital performances on June 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th & 15th! Watch for DVD/Blu-Ray order forms in May.

•        YDA’s Summer Dance Intensive – Young Dance Academy hosts its very own 2 week Summer Dance Intensive featuring a faculty of master class teachers from the Broadway stage, to TV, movies and professional dance companies.  Watch for more information to come in May.  Our Summer Dance Intensive will be held from Friday, August 10th through Thursday, August 23rd.

Dear Parents and Dancers:

MONTHLY TUITION – March tuition is due by Wednesday, March 7th.  Payments are considered late and subject to a $5.00 per week late fee if made after March 7th. Lauren Murphy was our $50 YDA Gift Certificate raffle winner for the month of February. Congratulations, Lauren!  Payments must be made by March 7th in order to participate in this month’s drawing for a $50 YDA Gift Certificate.

EASTER VACATION – The studio will be closed for Easter vacation from FRIday, March 30TH – SATURDAY, APRIL 7th.  Classes resume MONDAY, April 9th.  Remember to mark your calendars now!

PARENT OBSERVATION WEEK REMINDER – Parent Observation Week is NEXT MONTH, Monday, April 16th – Saturday, April 21st. These dates are listed in the studio brochure. Make a note on your calendar if you haven’t already.

HOLIDAY SHOWCASE DVDs – Don’t forget to pick up your DVDs & BluRays at the front desk if you have not already. Late orders may be picked up beginning Monday, March 12th.

JUNE 2018 RECITAL DATES – Below is a reminder of our confirmed June recital dates for 2018. All performances start at 7:00 p.m. in the Greendale High School Auditorium.  Please note: There will be 6 shows this year, not 7. There will not be a show on Saturday, June 16th. The recital dates are as follows:

RECITAL SCHEDULE – You will receive a specific recital schedule. You will then know exactly in which of the 6 shows your dancer(s) will be required to perform. The recital schedule will be complete and no changes will be made. For more details, please refer to the schedule when it comes out later this month.

DRESS REHEARSAL DATES – Below is a reminder of our 6 confirmed June dress rehearsal dates for 2018. All dress rehearsals are on stage in the Greendale High School auditorium. The dress rehearsal dates are as follows:

DRESS REHEARSAL SCHEDULE – A specific schedule will be available in April. Rehearsals are in full costume and make-up with proper required hairstyle. These rehearsals take the place of most regular classes in June (there will be regular classes held at the studio on Thursday, May 31st and Saturday, June 2nd), however your dancer’s specific rehearsal day will not be the same day as your dancer’s regular dance class day or days. Again, watch for the rehearsal schedule in April. There are NO tuition fees for June!

RECITAL CONFLICTS – I have been doing my best to work out everyone’s recital conflicts.  I have no doubt though that there will be problems.  If a school requirement or the like makes it impossible for your dancer to be at a particular performance you are scheduled to attend, you must let your teacher know immediately (as soon as the recital schedule becomes available). Teachers will not re-choreograph a dance to accommodate a missing dancer, as this is too much to expect of the dancers in the class. Instead, the teacher will replace your dancer with a substitute for the performance that your dancer will miss. Therefore, the substitute dancer will need to borrow the missing dancer’s costume for that particular performance. The teacher for each class will be in charge of the costume being loaned. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in this matter, as it will allow students to attend graduations while keeping a recital number running smoothly.  Thank you in advance for all of your help.

RECITAL SHOES – Did you order your recital shoes yet? April is a busy time for shoe suppliers. Please have orders placed by the end of March.  If you decide to wait we cannot guarantee you will have your shoes for your recital pictures in May. Check the shoe bulletin board in the hallway if you’d like to purchase or sell any used shoes.  

RECITAL MUSIC – Everyone should have received recital music CD. If for some reason you did not, please check at the front desk.  If you have misplaced your CD, additional CD’s are available at the front desk for $3.00 per replacement CD.

“ALL BOYS" RECITAL DANCE – Our first “All Boys Dance” Rehearsal is scheduled for Saturday, March 24th from 2:30 – 3:30pm at Young Dance Academy. Please let us know in advance if you will not be in attendance.

RECITAL TICKET SALE - NEW DATE THIS YEAR Recital tickets will go on sale in APRIL this year at a limit of 10 per family during our first week of ticket sales.  We use a lottery system for ticket sales, which will be explained later this month.  Everyone seated in our audience requires a ticket. Children 3 and under do not need a ticket if seated on the lap of a parent. All seating is reserved and tickets are $15.00 each for all 6 performances. Our ticket lottery sale day is Saturday, APRIL 28th.  If you fail to participate in the ticket lottery you will have through Saturday, May 5th to purchase your 10-ticket limit or fewer. On Monday, May 7th any remaining recital tickets will go on sale first come – first serve at 4:30pm at the studio.  Watch for more recital ticket purchasing information to come in April.

RECITAL PICTURE DATES – Class and individual pictures of your dancer in full costume are taken here at Young Dance in May.  This year pictures will be taken on Sunday, May 20th, Tuesday, May 22nd AND Wednesday, May 23rd. Schedules and picture package information will be available in April.

Information packets and a specific audition time schedule will be available Monday, March 12th. I am currently revising this season’s TI Program information packet for the 2018-2019 season. Once the information packets are available, please read it over carefully so you are well informed of the requirements prior to the audition.

CONGRATULATIONS – Congratulations to the Technique Intensive Program dancers who competed mid-February at the New York City Dance Alliance Convention/Competition in Chicago, IL! Check out our website for the detailed results! The dancers will be attending the NUVO dance convention in Chicago, IL and the Tribute National Talent Competition in Oswego, IL this month. Good luck, dancers!

SUMMER PROGRAM INFORMATION - A variety of classes will be held over the summer in our 8-week program from June 18th – August 9th, 2018. Summer classes at Young Dance Academy are offered during both daytime and evening hours Monday through Thursday, as well as Saturday mornings. We also offer 2-Day Themed Mini Dance Camps that perfect for dancers ages 3-5. Mini dance camp classes are held Tuesdays & Thursdays throughout the summer from 5:00 – 6:00pm beginning Tuesday, June 19th. Each week is a different themed class. Both of our summer programs schedules will be available and emailed to you on Monday, March 12th. 

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND – For those of you making weekend plans in advance, the studio will be closed for Memorial weekend Friday, May 25th– Monday, May 28th.

Dear Parents and Dancers,

February is already here and recital dances are well under way in all of the classes performing in the recital. Individual recital music CDs were handed out in classes beginning Monday, January 22nd. If your dancer was absent and did not receive his or her CD, please see the front desk staff. If you misplace your copy, a new copy can be purchased at the front desk at a cost of $3.00 per CD. Remind your dancers to practice using the music we have provided. It is more fun and much easier to practice as you go, rather than waiting until the last minute to try and practice the entire dance as it gets close to the recital!

TUITION REMINDER – February tuition must be paid by Wednesday, February 7th (also any other past due tuition payments) to be eligible for the $50 gift certificate drawing. Late payments will incur a $5.00 per week late fee. Congratulations to Ella Frank, winner of last month’s gift certificate drawing!

HOLIDAY SHOWCASE DVDs – Holiday Showcase DVDs will be available for pick up at the studio beginning MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12th. You may still place an order for a Holiday Showcase DVD at $45.00 per DVD. Late orders placed by Saturday, February 17th will be available for pick up at the studio beginning Monday, March 12th. Any late orders placed after February 17th will be charged a $10.00 late fee bringing the total cost to $50.00 per DVD.

“ALL BOYS” RECITAL DANCE – As many of you know, each year all of the boys enrolled at Young Dance Academy are eligible to participate in our “all boys” number in the June recitals.  All families with a boy enrolled at the studio will receive an email next week with further details. 

RECITAL SCHEDULE – I have been working on the recital and rehearsal schedules for our June recitals and will have completed schedules to you by the end of March. My most important goal is to make sure that dancers in the same family perform all of their dances in at least one show together. This process is done so families do not have to purchase tickets for more than one performance if they do not desire to do so. It is very difficult to make this possible for all families, and occasionally, I cannot accommodate everyone. Also, it is impossible to make allowances for those going on vacations, etc. however; I do realize that some things are out of our control, such as graduations and family weddings. DANCERS ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL PERFORMANCES SCHEDULED FOR THEIR PARTICULAR CLASS. If your dancer is required to dance in 3 shows, they must be there for all 3 performances and corresponding dress rehearsals. Our dancers do not stay in one particular spot on stage for the duration of their dance. They are continuously changing formations and it is unfair to expect the rest of the class to accommodate for your dancer’s empty spot because of a trip to Great America or leaving early for a family vacation before the end of recital week. Once the schedule is finished, NO CHANGES WILL BE MADE! Changing it would affect too many people so once it is done it is final. Please note that the majority of classes will perform in 2-3 shows.

PLEASE NOTE: Dancers and parents, please pay particularly close attention to the policy that dancers need to be at ALL of their scheduled performances. In the past, we have had dancers not show up for a scheduled performance, but managed to make it to the show that they had purchased tickets for their family. This causes many problems backstage before the show and can negatively affect the performance of others. Please phone the studio ahead of time if your child is injured or ill at the last minute and will not be able to make a scheduled performance.


RECITAL SHOES – Many people have recently asked questions about dyeing dance shoes for the recital. Please do not dye any shoes until just before recital pictures. Dye can be purchased at most cobbler or shoe repair shops. The elastic straps on ballet slippers cannot be dyed, so the elastic must be changed to match the shoe color. Laces on jazz shoes cannot be dyed and must also be replaced. When dying ballet slippers pink; choose a light pastel pink to match the pink ballet slippers sold at the studio. Test the color on scrap material before applying to dance shoes! If your dancer is required to have a strap or children’s tap shoe, the oxford tie tap shoes are NOT acceptable; they will not coordinate well with dancers’ costumes if it is a certain style dress or skirt. Do not forget to check our bulletin board in the hallway in between the boys’ and girls’ dressing rooms. Even if you do not need shoes yourself, there are many people looking for shoes that you may have at home and can get rid of usefully. If you have put a note on the board and have sold shoes, remember to remove your note to make room for new notes. Also, the board in the hallway is for shoes and dancewear ONLY and not for any other advertising.

SNOW CLOSINGS – As a general rule, the studio is closed when Oak Creek Public schools close due to inclement weather.  If you are unsure if we will be closed, please call the studio, check our website and check on FOX 6 (Channel 6) or at www.myfoxmilwaukee.com. You may request a make up class if you so desire. As it states in our fall brochure, no refunds are given for classes canceled due to weather conditions.  PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT CLOSE FOR PREDICTED STORMS.
